More of the Daily Foods

This month is going to be a busy cooking month, particularly the end of the month. Of course you'll all get to experience, virtually, the dinner, desserts and snacks that will be had by family and friends of mine, but for now I will continue with the weekly soups and work lunches.

Most recently, I made a matzo ball soup.

MatzoSoupyDoop

Being that matzo is purely wheat and water and I only added 2 tbsps of potato startch, I truly thought this soup would be a little on the plain side. Well, I was pleasantly surprised! The matzo took on the flavour of the broth, simmered with green onions, carrots and peas. It was both hearty and delicious! Oh, and not to mention- nutritious.

Next up we have more lunchables. First, I made a coconut curried noodle dish.

coconutcurrynoodles

All it requires is cooking up some rice noodles, simmering shallots, garlic, sesame oil, curry powder (the original called for paste, but I preferred the powder), tamari, turmeric, salt, and coconut milk. After it's mixed altogether, you throw in some some diced tomatoes and fresh basil.

For a different noodle dish, I made rice noodles with spicy nut dressing.

PeanutRiceNoodz

For the salad, I chopped red and yellow peppers, added some freshly chopped cilantro (and let me tell you- it was the first time using my food processor and I was beyond amazed at how wonderful it is at chopping such food items!) and toasted peanuts. The dressing included peanut butter, veggie stock, rice vinegar, tamari, toasted sesame oil, a bit of sugar, cayenne pepper and a freshly grated ginger root.

I prefer the nut dish over the curry dish, personally. I think the sweeter flavour does me right.

Next up is a macaroni bean salad. This is one of my faves and I plan on making a big bowl of it for future cookouts.

macandbeansalad

After boiling up some elbow rice pasta, I mixed together some Veganaise (is there any other kind?), fresh minced parsely, red wine vinegar, sugar, basil, celery seed, paprika, salt, pepper and garlic powder. I combined this with grated carrot, green bell pepper, red onion, and tons and tons of kidney beans. The recipe called for relish, but I'm not much of a fan.

Psst... Add some dijon. You won't regret it.

Lastly, I give you the typical black bean and corn salad, but with an excellent dressing.

BlackbeanandCornSalady

Lime juice, flax oil, red onion, cilantro, green onions, cumin, chopped tomato, salt and black pepper made this a very tasty work lunch indeed. However, I think throwing it in some whole wheat wraps makes it even better. So that's exactly what I did.

Now for a review: Hemp Milk vs Soy Milk

hempp

I tried chocolate hemp milk for the first time last week and I have to say, I didn't like it too much at first. It's definitely an acquired taste. Mike described it best: It's like a protein shake. It's grainy, it tastes a little like chalk. But you know what? After a few sips, I started to like it. It is very reminiscent of Ovaltine and I used to drink that stuff by the gallons when I was a kid.

However, nothing can win my heart over like soy milk. Certainly not rice milk. Bleck! I love rice, but not when it's all liquidy and gooey. No, no. My heart belongs to the almighty soy, master of several different milky flavours, including vanilla, chocolate, chai, mocha, coffee, spice, nog, pumpkin, chocolate mint, etc... Not only is it delicious and a very good substitute for recipes requiring milk, it is also a pleasant treat in a glass, void of all grain and chalk.

Of course I am aware that plain soy milk gives off a tofu-y flavour when consumed by itself, but why drink it plain when you could always have chocolate? :)

Once again, your photos are just gorgeous. I would love some of the black bean and corn salad please! I just bought some of that peppermint chocolate Vitasoy, but haven't tried it yet. Is it as good as it sounds?

oh holy crap. i cannot get enough of the peppermint chocolate soy milk. i am so desperately and horribly addicted to it. it's becoming a problem. i find that i even just like to look at pictures of it...ooooh, see, so pretty.

i'm trying to distract myself with your other beautiful and so much more nutritious looking dishes...good thing they're alluring or they'd have no chance in front of the glory that is peppermint chocolate milk.

ps--i cannot be convinced to ever again try that hemp milk. bleck! i thought it was awful. and certainly it had nothing on the glory that is... ah, you get the idea.

Suzie,
I really enjoying reading your blog. These recipes look so frickin' wicked good my stomach is starting to rumble just looking at the pictures you took and the descriptions.
So is your opinion of hemp milk thumbs up? I only recently started drinking soy milk and love it. 365 Organic Vanilla is my favorite right now. I will have to check out hemp milk though. Do you recommend Living Harvest which is the type you have pictured or some other brand?
P.S. It looks like you had an incredibly delicious T-day as well.

Your noodle & bean dishes look amazing :-) I love the "daily food" concept. My favorite way to drink hemp milk is in a smoothie - I have to admit, I don't like any of the milks on their own (nor did I ever like drinking cow's milk alone - ugh).

I used to love matzo ball soup before becoming a vegetarian... why did I never think to make a veg version?!

I haven't tried the chocolate peppermint Vitasoy yet, but I love the chocolate banana one!

It did take me a while to acquire a taste for hemp milk, but now I love it. Frankly, every milk besides soy milk was an acquired taste for me, but now I love almond milk (only Pacific brand), hemp milk (only Living Harvest brand), vanilla rice milk (only Rice Dream brand), and soy milk. I like to rotate different kinds of milks so that I'm not comsuming too much of any one thing.

ahh, I haven't had matzo ball soup since I became a vegan!! I must try it!! Mmm, and your noodle dishes look terrific as well!!

Okay, you KNOW how obsessed I am with hempmilk, but to each their own I guess ;0) I'm also a huge fan of almond-milk, ricemilk, hazelnut-milk, and oatmilk.

Thanks, Alec! I'm kinda in the middle between a thumbs up and a thumbs down, but I'm leaning more towards up. I do recommend Living Harvest. That seems to be the brand everyone raves about. Give it a try, maybe you'll like it. Personally, I'll drink it but I won't go out of my way to get it.

I wish there was more of that matzo ball soup. It was really good and I didn't get to have much. -:>(

I guess there's always next time... when you double the recipe. -;>D

Everything looks great, especially your noodle dishes. I haven't tried hempmilk, but we drink *so much* soy milk. Vanilla flavour isn't easy to find in Australia, so I've really come to enjoy the beany flavour that plain soymilk has. There are a few brands that try to mimic cow milk by getting rid of the beaniness, but we don't buy them because we love soy so much!

mmm, that soup looks wonderful! as do the noodles. I've never actually tried peppermint soy milk, but rest assured if I ever saw it in a grocery store I'd probably launch myself at the fake-dairy counter in order TO try it. :D

Everything looks so good! I have not made matzo ball soup, but I like your description! It's all snowy out here, and that looks like a good pick for tonight's dinner!

I really want to make this: coconut curried noodle dish! Wow! Looks easy and good. Anything with coconut milk works for me!

I'd also like to make that macaroni bean salad... right now! I love kidney beans in pasta salads. Yes - dijon! I'd add some, definitely!

I've not tried the chocolate hemp milk, but I liked the regular flavor. I just saw that Peppermint Chocolate soy milk at Whole Foods the other day! I should have gotten some, but I skipped it and went for Rice Dream. I never liked the boxed rice milks much, but even some boxed soy milks are too chalky for me too. The ones in the fridgerated section tend to be better, and I'm not addicted to Rice Dream! (regular flavor)

Thanks for the Omega 3 comment today on my blog! I forgot to add in that paragraph, and I updated it! Oops! Thank you for pointing that out. :)

Since I avoid soy, I have come to love rice milk and almond milk.

I love your salads! Your black bean salad looks a lot like the one I make. Do you use heaps of cilantro like I do? I want to do some pasta salads for holiday parties. I hope you'll post some more of yours.

I just updated a post for the art-y stuff.

Hmmm....I should try some of the that chocolate hemp milk!

And that Matzo Ball soup looks absolutely fab!

Yikes, totally reminded me that I have chocolate peppermint soymilk unopened in the fridge! Must go now....

Mmmmm, those are some delicious looking noodle-rice-salads you've got there! Especially the curry noodles.

Noodles!!! Those rice noodles reminds me of the noodles my family uses to stuff in big pieces of lettuce. It's like an Asian taco lol.

I'm glad you posted some information on the Hemp milk since I was so confused when I was looking for the right one to try out. I'll eventually give it a try especially if it's chocolate milk!
