Dog Music?

Well, now, this is just odd.

According to this Yahoo! news article, '...a song audible only to dogs has topped New Zealand record charts, and is looking to go global.'

It's recorded at a frequency only canines can hear. It's supposed to be soothing to dogs, but there have been cases reported where the dog starts flipping out and going crazy. Other dogs, it seems to have no effect on whatsoever.

Animal Rights activists are against it because of the violent attacks it causes in some dogs. However, sales are sky rocketing. Everyone wants their dog to hear music, apparently.

What are your thoughts on this?

Personally, it freaks me out and I don't like it. Dogs can hear mid to bass tones just fine. That's how they recognize their owner's voice or jump when they hear a bang or a crash. I've never seen a dog get all excited when music was playing. In fact, high pitches usually hurt their ears and make them crazy. Why on earth would some crazy person think this invention was cool or even necessary in the least?

You want to please your dog? Here's what you do. You feed them daily (preferably organic food), give them fresh water, take them for walks, play with them, scratch behind their ears, rub their bellies and tell them how much you love them. Nothing is more pleasing to a dog's ears than the sound of their human pal's voice.

It just seems like a stupid gimmick to me. I doubt the band really thought it would make dogs happy. One of them probably just said "it'd be cool if we did a song only dogs could hear."

That's crazy. Why on earth would dogs need to listen to music? It sounds like torture to me.

that seems strange... I'm really not getting the point (besides providing something else to sell/make soft news about). Especially if some dogs are flipping out! This is right up there with dog costumes... except more unsettling. :/

I'm with you 100%, on how to REALLY please a dog - that song probably HURTS their poor ears!

I've seen CD's geared towards dogs and cats, presumably music that calms them when their people aren't home. I can see why someone might want that. We used to leave the radio on for Nacho when we first brought her home. But a song that is so high-pitched it can't be heard by human ears? Seems pointless and stupid to me.

Here here! Walks, food, water, and playing; sounds like a "dog's life" to me ;o).

Poor dogs who have to suffer due to peoples' stupid inventions!

What a ridiculously stupid gimmick... Poor dogs! I totally agree about what a dog REALLY needs... Love, food, attention, exercise, kisses (not on the mouth, though, thank you!), and a warm, comfy bed to sleep on. That's what my dog gets, and call me crazy--but she seems to enjoy it more than wearing headphones with a weird noise playing!

That seems pretty unnecessary. There are lots of ways to make dogs happy - playing high-pitch sounds is NOT one of them (duh!).

You know, the first time I had my stereo playing in my room, my dog barked...so I turned it off. I guess I can't do that anymore or at least keep it to a low volume.

As for rubbing her belly, playing with her, petting her head, picking her up and letting her watch tv or sleep next to me...I already do that! ;-)

Another stupid gimmick to make money. I'm sure it will fade out just like all the other 2 minute fads. (We can hope, anyway.)

yep, this dog "music" sounds weird, pointless, and potentially harmful. what the heck?! i hadn't heard about it before, though - it's an interesting topic.

I heard about this last week and I agree it's a total gimmick. I think some dogs like "people" music, but mostly they like the loving voices of their caregivers.

WOW that is stupid. How could people buy that? They want their dogs to hear music? Dogs can hear 'human music' just fine.

As to the question of whether dogs like music, I would imagine most of the time dogs would 'like' music because that music means something to them. Like maybe every night you come home and turn on the music before making dinner. The dog would 'like' the music because he/she associates music with their owner being home and cooking dinner, hanging out with the dog. Just my take though. Maybe some dogs really do like different types of music.
